Influences: Nile Bridgeman and Garnette Cadogan

Read Nile’s original article on The Architects’ Journal.

Issue 6 of Real Review. ‘Just in Time’ currently has my attention – it is my favourite issue of one of my favourite publications. Real Review just about passes as architectural; typically they take a more expansive view of architecture and the built environment than most other magazines, and feature articles from wider yet associated fields of contemporary culture.

Each issue weaves seemingly disparate topics together in a sort of mixed-media approach that always feels purposeful. I recently picked up my copy again to re-read an incredibly intimate (and relatable) Garnette Cadogan essay, here titled ‘Black and Blue’, and can be found elsewhere under ‘Walking While Black’. It provides brilliant insight into the often-burdensome experience of the ostensibly simple act of walking – and it is absolutely essential reading: 'Walking as a black man has made me feel simultaneously more removed from the city… and more connected to it.'
